Tyres are the primary source of contact between a vehicle and the road. Most people however pay less attention to the fact and drive their vehicles with worn and damaged tyres, compromising the very safety.

Causes of various tyre wear

  1. Toe settings

The inward and outward pointing of the wheels concerning the central line of the vehicle is known as the toe. It’s set in a way to take almost any slack in the suspension joints allowing tyres to run parallel to each other when vehicle’s moving in a straight direction. All modern vehicles have tout tolerances which means modifications to the settings are far less. Too much of the toe dramatically reduces the tyre life.

  1. Camber

The tilt away from wheel’s vertical is known as the camber. It’s designed to place the wheel loading on the larger wheel bearing on the inner side of the front and rear wheel drive vehicles. Too much camber or arc would only cause the tyre to wear off from the shoulder which would pull the vehicle to one side as you drive.

  1. Caster

The retrograde tilt of the steering axis which is designed to give the feel on the steering alongside self-centring is referred to as caster. It allows the steering to straighten up following a turn or corner. Too little caster would cause the vehicle to ramble whereas too much of it would result in strained steering; ending up with car tyre replacement in worse case!

  1. Steering set-back

The angle when one of the wheel is a “set back” from the other. In case of higher steering set back, the vehicle is likely to pull towards the side where wheel actually set back. This situation usually arises when a vehicle has already experienced an accident.
